Hope and Anchor pub, Islington, London -19/12/1978
I’d heard John Peel playing The Cure’s controversial single Killing an Arab on his show and was intrigued. I went to see them on a freezing cold december night in the dank basement of The Hope and Anchor pub in Islington. There were about 12 people in the audience. When they’d finished, they went into the ’dressing room’, which was about the size of a rabbit hutch. Anticipating that they might be a bit gauche, I preset my camera to what I thought the exposure would be, opened the door, and took one shot immediately on entering. »That was a great show lads, any chance of a photo?’« They turned their backs, said »NO!«, and I was politely asked to leave.
